Standards
The Barbados Manufacturers’ Association encourages its members, and all other manufacturers, to produce products of the highest standard. In an attempt to make sure that these standards are met, the Barbados National Standard Institute (BNSI) has developed ‘The Barbados National Standard, BNSI 5: Part 2:2004 Labeling of Pre-packaged Food’ to address the issue of labeling and packaging. In addition, the BNSI also publishes other national standards on building, food, chemicals, textiles, solar energy, furniture, etc. All such standards are published in the BNSI’s Standards Catalogue which can be obtained from the BNSI office at "Flodden", Culloden Road, St. Michael. Besides local standards, there are also potential regional and international standards that manufacturers should be aware of. Such a regional standard is the ‘Caricom Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ)’which has already been developed and is awaiting Governments’ approval to implement such standards in individual CARICOM States. And lastly, there are international standards such as ISO and HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) that are deemed important to manufacturers wishing to export out of the region to countries that enforce such standards are met in the production of various products.
