BMEX Respect Due BMA TV
Plastics, Packaging and Chemicals
Manufacturing is one such sector that has played a vital role in the development of our national economy and has been a primary source of economic growth.

With national celebrations such as May Day and BMEX 2009 – the BMA’s flagship exhibition – both taking place this month, May could well be designated Industry Month. It is an opportunity for all of us as proud Barbadians to honour the hard work and achievement of our various thriving sectors and the difference that these industries have made to the quality of our lives.

Manufacturing is one such sector that has played a vital role in the development of our national economy and has been a primary source of economic growth. Many local manufacturers have been in operation since Independence and demonstrate evidence and effectiveness in areas of corporate responsibility, economic impact and workforce excellence.

An important aspect of manufacturing that we need to give more recognition to, however, is our exports. Besides the creation of wealth, the reduction of our trade deficit, and the creation of jobs, many of our locally manufactured products are soughtafter and thoroughly enjoyed by thousands of people abroad. Whether it is among the Caribbean Diaspora in traditional US, UK or Canadian markets, or visitors who enjoyed our products while on holiday or business, our products are sometimes enjoyed abroad much more than they are right here at home.

Some of the larger exporters of Barbadian products include companies like Mount Gay Rum whose products are distributed in Australia, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Spain, France as well as the USA, Canada and the UK. This local rum is the oldest rum brand in the world and is a recipient of several international gold medal awards. WIBISCO is another company whose acclaimed Shirley is owned by many in the UK market and across the Caribbean as their favourite biscuit. Also available across the Caribbean Diaspora, their cracker and biscuit lines are loved by many.

Another great exporter is the Pine Hill Dairy which offers a wide range of healthful pasteurized, evaporated and UHT long-life milks and juices in assorted sizes, convenient packaging and delicious flavours to suit every taste. Deserts and cultured products Celebrating Barbadian Industry - At Home & Abroad such as yogurts, ice cream and cottage cheeses are also available. From airline refreshments to a refreshing break these products are widely available and appreciated across the region and beyond. Then there is the internationally acclaimed Banks Beer, available in Canada, the US and the UK, a real Bajan beer.

This is an opportunity for us all to celebrate and recognize the contributions that manufacturing has made to the growth, development and popularity of Barbados. We produce world class products that keep visitors and our very own abroad coming back for more; let’s not take it for-granted. Let’s support Bajan and strengthen our national economy.
